BHAY Blog: “Slowly She Turned, Step by Step, Inch by Inch…”

Wouldn’t it be nice if good intentions were enough to create change? If buying new sneakers would instantly improve your running time, and having a cookbook with healthy recipes on your shelf would be enough to automatically change your eating habits.  Even better would be going for one walk and coming home, stepping on theContinue reading “BHAY Blog: “Slowly She Turned, Step by Step, Inch by Inch…””

BHAY: Putting the Big in my Big Hairy Audacious Year

In order to discern my path to reach my goals for this year, I need to know my starting point. So I got on the bathroom scale to write my current weight in my planner.  I also wrapped a measuring tape around my waist so I could my starting number in my planner. The numbers are recorded, and I know now my starting point.  Later that night , while waiting for sleep it occurred to me to find out my BMI, the Body Mass Index.  So, I found my height on the chart, and then traced the path of the weights listed until I came to the one that was closest to what the scale registered.  Turns out: it’s going to be a daunting journey to get ready to climb that hill on Iona.   I think the phrase “Morbidly obese” is inaccurate. I may be obese, but I’m not morbid, I’m cheerful, resilient, generally optimistic and hopeful. I know, I know the phrase “morbidly obese” refers to the impact the excess weight is having on my health. I was just messingContinue reading “BHAY: Putting the Big in my Big Hairy Audacious Year”

BHAY: Venn the Going Gets Rough, aka My Audacious Use of Math for Personal Growth

Today is Groundhog Day 2021: it was my mother’s favorite holiday, and so it holds a special place in my heart now.  Also Punxsutawney is just a little over an hour away from where I live so the annual celebration of Phil’s prognostication gets a lot of news coverage:  six more weeks of winter itContinue reading “BHAY: Venn the Going Gets Rough, aka My Audacious Use of Math for Personal Growth”

My Audacious 2021 – Blog 2: Love in a Time of Cholera? Try Personal Growth in a Time of Pandemic and Societal Unrest

It felt selfish and silly to get my hair cut and colored just days after the invasion of the US Capitol.  Surely there was something more important for me to do. Okay, I was praying, and scrolling through social media to learn more about the events, plus hearing about phenomena like QAnon and “cancel culture”Continue reading “My Audacious 2021 – Blog 2: Love in a Time of Cholera? Try Personal Growth in a Time of Pandemic and Societal Unrest”

BHAY Blog #1 for 2021: Star Light, Star Bright …What Did We Just See?

The blessing and the curse of social media is that we have lots of information, many opinions, genuine insights from people on all points on any given spectrum – religious views, political parties, whether to vaccinate children, whether laws requiring seat belts, motorcycle helmets or the wearing of masks are attacks on civil liberties, forContinue reading “BHAY Blog #1 for 2021: Star Light, Star Bright …What Did We Just See?”

The Big Hairy Audacious Beauty of Plan B: Blog #11: Lessons on Carols, “Silent Night”

Very few things go as planned. Trying to force things to go as planned or expected can cost us relationships, our joy, waste our time, and rob us of the opportunity to experience the beauty of Plan B. As so often happens, I was reminded about this just last night. The video I was tryingContinue reading “The Big Hairy Audacious Beauty of Plan B: Blog #11: Lessons on Carols, “Silent Night””

Blog #10 of my Big Hairy Audacious Year, my Audacity to Celebrate during a Pandemic: Second in my series of Lessons on Carols

If we waited for everything to be okay to celebrate what is good in the world, we would never celebrate. If we expect our Christmas celebrations to be perfect and Hallmark-movie-happy, we will always be disappointed. If we confuse faith with rose-colored glasses, refusing to acknowledge that the world’s pain is real and profound, weContinue reading “Blog #10 of my Big Hairy Audacious Year, my Audacity to Celebrate during a Pandemic: Second in my series of Lessons on Carols”

My Big Hairy Audacious Take on Lessons from Carols: BHAY Blog #9

Underneath Yellowstone National Park a plume of magma moves up from the earth’s core, superheating the underground water table so that on a  very regular basis a geyser shoots up through the crust, delighting onlookers at the Park. It’s a tourist attraction, and a reminder that there’s more happening under our feet than we canContinue reading “My Big Hairy Audacious Take on Lessons from Carols: BHAY Blog #9”

BHAY Blog #8: Big Hairy Audacious Blog in Remembrance of my Mom’s Birthday

My mother would have celebrated her 88th birthday today, December 21st if not for a combination of lifestyle choices, chronic health issues, benign but slightly negligent care at her skilled care facility, and boredom. She died in January of 2016, aged 83, leaving a rich and wildly esoteric and exotic legacy of arcane facts, culturalContinue reading “BHAY Blog #8: Big Hairy Audacious Blog in Remembrance of my Mom’s Birthday”

Blog #7 of my BHAY:Lean In to the Light

[Based on a sermon preached for First Presbyterian Church, Avonmore, PA: “Welcome Joy” on 12/13/20] Palestine in the first century CE was a difficult place to live if you were not wealthy.  Poverty was rampant, tax laws cost people their land, and the country was occupied by the Romans where any sign of dissent wasContinue reading “Blog #7 of my BHAY:Lean In to the Light”
